peter kendallABC – Artist at Work

Portrait artist Peter Kendall is spending his Artopia residency getting a fly-on-the-wall look at the ABC – turning his experiences at the East Perth studios into a sketch book and blog of ABC staff going about their daily tasks.

From Geoff Hutchison taking talkback calls on 720 ABC Perth to ABC News crews out in the field and the Rollercoaster team filming their national children’s show, Peter will be able to sketch it all and share it with us on this blog.

Peter’s residency is just one way the ABC is supporting Artopia with 720 ABC Perth and Local Radio WA proud to help West Australian’s discover art, everywhere, by being a media partner of this unique event.

  1. I love the juxtaposition of the ancient style of record keeping – drawing scenes, capturing key characters – and the using the latest in communication technology by putting them up on this slick looking website. These pictures will be treasures for the ABC long after Artopia 07. Your work is exceptional Peter!

  2. Ancient style! Ancient style! Oh well yes I suppose so. I love doing it .I just put the pen on the paper, look and start drawing. Mostly I look at the subject 95% and 5% looking down to see I’m on track.

  3. How long does it take you to do these drawings?

  4. The simple answer is minutes. Some like Lee take seconds, others like “in the booth WAFL” initial drawing 10 minutes and colour etc another 20.
I spent at least two and half hours on the drawing of Doug Spencer, actually ,it doesnt look as good in the blog ,In fact all the artwork on the Blog have lost something being reduced in size. Maybe we should try and put one in actual size!

  5. Hi Peter,
I’ve added a larger version to the file. See what you think? There’s a link underneath the portrait.
